This week, in addition to working at the centers, I have begun my online research. Or shall I say tried to begin my online research. It is quite difficult to find research and resources specifically about the benefits of signing to children with cochlear implants. So far, I haven’t struck a pot of gold in that subject. However, I can settle for a pot of silver and bronze. I have broadened my search into research about hand movements in general. Signing, in the simplest terms, is hand movements. Therefore, it should more-or-less follow the same ideas and reasoning behind the benefits of hands-on activities and movement in education. Additionally, I further expanded my search for research by eliminating the “with cochlear implants.” There are studies and articles behind the benefits of signing to babies/toddlers. Although the studies aren’t specific to children with cochlear implants, there must be overlap in learning styles between children with and without cochlear implants. Hence, I should be able to apply this research to support my project.
